Actress Ellen Paige took the stage last week at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to THRIVE conference. She used her time on stage to come out publicly as a lesbian saying, “I am here today because I am gay. And because maybe I can make a difference.” Paige has never acknowledged her sexuality before and was apparently motivated in part by the false reports tying her romantically to actors like Elijah Wood and Emile Hirsch. “I’m tired of hiding and I’m tired of lying by omission,” she said.
Paige went on to acknowledge that she chose to come out, “to help others have an easier and more hopeful time” and acknowledged the pain of living in the closet. “I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered. My mental health suffered. And my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today with all of you on the other side of that pain.”
As more and more stars come out of the closet, with them come the stories of their years hiding their true identity from the world. Ellen’s candid statement will add to the growing community of people living proudly, inspiring others who seek the courage to be themselves.
