Prisoners star Maria Bello came out this week in a candid column for the New York Times. The actress announced that she is in a long-term same-sex relationship with someone she would have previously described as her long-term same-sex best friend. She describes meeting her friend-turned-partner by saying, “we had an immediate connection but didn’t think of it as romantic or sexual. She was one of the most beautiful, charming, brilliant and funny people I had ever met, but it didn’t occur to me…that we could perhaps choose to love each other romantically.” But things obviously changed when Bello realized, “she is the person I like being with the most, the one with whom I am most myself.”
But Bello doesn’t stop there. She goes on to express how her family doesn’t start and stop with her new partner and her 12 year old son (from a previous relationship with Dan McDermott.) In fact her new family includes Dan and other “partners” of sort including a platonic male friend who was her go-to confidante during heartbreak and various bumps in the proverbial road throughout her adult life. “Because we were platonic, did that make him any less of a partner?” she asked. In the piece she admits that her, “feelings about attachment and partnership have always been … fluid and evolving.”
Bello is a woman both of her time and ahead of her time, redefining family as a collaboration of partner’s who enrich each others lives and support one another. Here’s hoping her modern family has years of happiness ahead as they pave their own unique way in the world.
